The Ford Expedition is one of the best vehicles out there for covering a lot of miles at a time. It is big, very comfortable, fast and spacious enough for the whole family. That’s why it is also very important for the Expedition to have excellent headlights and good lighting as a whole.
While newer Ford Expedition models almost exclusively come with HID (Xenon) headlights, which illuminate the road like the best out there, older models come with halogen headlights that can be improved. Namely, you can improve their range, power and looks if you replace them with new bulbs or completely new aftermarket headlights.
In this guide, we’re going to talk about all the ways you can improve the headlights on your Ford Expedition.
While the latest Ford Expedition models typically boast HID (Xenon) headlights, renowned for their exceptional road illumination capabilities, the older versions are often equipped with halogen headlights, which leave room for improvement.
Fortunately, there are several ways to enhance these older headlights, elevating their range, intensity, and aesthetic appeal. Options range from simply replacing the existing bulbs with more advanced versions to installing entirely new aftermarket headlight units. This guide is dedicated to exploring all the potential upgrades for the headlights of your Ford Expedition.
Whether you’re looking to achieve brighter, more far-reaching light for safer night driving or aiming to give your vehicle a more modern and sleek appearance, this guide will provide you with the information and steps needed to make those enhancements effectively. Stay tuned to learn how to transform the lighting of your Ford Expedition, enhancing both its functionality and style.

How to find the right headlights for Ford Expedition?
This is not as straightforward as it might seem, for the simple reason that every generation of the Expedition uses different bulbs for the headlight units. That’s why we recommend checking in the owner’s manual before buying new bulbs or at least asking your nearest Ford dealer. For example, the Ford Expedition produced from 2003-2006 uses 9006 bulbs for the low beam and 9005 bulbs for the high beam, while newer models use H11 and 9007 combination.
How to upgrade the headlights on the Ford Expedition?
Ford has done a great job with the headlights on each generation, which is the case with almost every other vehicle in the segment. However, in order to get the most out of your headlights, we recommend replacing your bulbs only with the highest quality halogen bulbs that you’ll buy from reputable manufacturers. Cheap bulbs are not only dimmer, but they will burn out quickly.
If your Expedition is not equipped with HID (Xenon) headlights, you can still replace your halogen bulbs with HID bulbs. However, you’ll need a conversion kit for this, as HID bulbs work with different electricity. The conversion is easy though, and the prices of HID bulbs today are not very high. After replacing the halogen bulbs with HID bulbs, you should get more powerful light, farther reach and longer life. In our book, it is worth it.
LED bulbs are also an alternative in the past few years. The problem with these bulbs is that there are a lot of different manufacturers to choose from, most of them no-name coming from China. Here you really don’t know what you’ll get – the headlights might be brighter, but they may not reach as far as halogen bulbs. In our testing, there are not a lot of LED bulbs that show improvement when compared to halogen bulbs, but your mileage may vary.
The best way to improve the headlights on your Expedition is by replacing the OEM headlights with aftermarket headlights. There are a lot of different aftermarket headlights to choose from, most of them bringing significant advantages like projector housing and natural support for HID bulbs. Most of them are available with LED daytime running lights, which not only make your vehicle more visible to the others but also make the front end of the Expedition look more modern.
Light bulbs replacement guide
As an example here we will take the second generation of the Ford Expedition, that comes with 9005 and 9006 bulbs. That said, the same guide can be applied to models with H11 and 9007 bulbs. In order to change the bulbs on the Expedition, unlike in some other vehicles, you need to remove the whole headlight assembly. To do that, you’ll need to remove the two 10mm bolts at the top of the headlight assembly, and then pull out the headlight from the front bumper. Take it easy, as the plastic clips might break. Then, follow these steps for replacing the bulbs themselves:
- Pull the rubber dust cover
- Turn the bulb ¼ counterclockwise
- Remove the wiring assembly by prying up the plastic clip
- Connect the new bulb to the wiring assembly
- Insert the new bulb into the headlight and rotate clockwise
The same process applies to both the low beam and high beam bulbs.
