The Toyota Highlander has been in production since January 2001. It is also sold in other countries as the Toyota Kluger. The car was the first mid-size crossover to be based on a sedan – the Toyota Camry. With it came halogen headlights that have since been upgraded to LEDs in the latest models.
The Highlander with the top headlights on can be seen in all cars, while the shape of the headlight is slightly different.
The design of the headlights was changed in 2009 when the Toyota Highlander got a groundbreaking new look.
The top headlights are also known as projector lights, they have one bulb for high beam and one bulb for low beam inside each headlight that is sealed into the light.
In 2009, the Toyota Highlander underwent a significant redesign, marking a new era in its aesthetic evolution. A key element of this transformation was the redesign of the headlights, which adopted a more modern and sophisticated appearance.
This change not only enhanced the vehicle’s visual appeal but also represented an advancement in lighting technology. The introduction of projector headlights was a notable feature of this redesign.
Projector headlights are known for their precise light distribution, offering a sharper and more focused beam compared to traditional reflector headlights. This change significantly improved nighttime visibility and safety.

The headlights of the Toyota Highlander are made to reduce high beams from blinding oncoming traffic, and they can be changed.
The light of the top headlight is not as bright as the light of a halogen bulb, but it’s also not that much duller than a standard halogen bulb either.
Projector headlights use a deep blue or purple lens that is marked with an X to reduce the high beam.
The projection of the light on the road less bright, but it has a sharper cut off line for high beams and doesn’t blind oncoming traffic. The lights are more focused on exactly where you want them to be instead of being dispersed over a larger area.
But this also means that even if you don’t have your high beams on, they still project as low beams onto things like signs and overhead road structure so it takes some getting used to before they seem as bright as regular halogen bulbs!
There are two different types of headlight bulbs for Toyota Highlander, one is11B which can be used for projector lights, and the other is 9003 which can be used for halogen headlights.
The 11B type is slightly bigger than the 9003 type so make sure not to mix up the two types of bulbs!
While it’s possible for you or any mechanic to change headlight assembly or even install aftermarket projector headlights into your car, it’s still recommended that you leave this kind of work to a professional body shop unless you are an experienced DIYer with experience working on cars.
Projector light conversion kits are sold at sites like Amazon, but they only cover the headlight housing unit itself – not the whole vehicle headlights system so non-canbus LED or Xenon HID may burn out the warning indicator light on the dashboard or have high beam flicker issues.
For this reason, it’s important that you purchase original equipment replacement parts. That way, your new headlights will function properly and look like new again soon.
Bulb types used in headlights
The Toyota Highlander comes with a 9006 bulb for its high beam headlights and an H11 bulb for its low beam headlights. Toyota installed LED bulbs for the fog lights, brake lights, taillights, and rear side marker lights.
Upgrading from the factory bulbs to the aftermarket led/hid
The factory headlights are not very good, and while they will get the job done okay it’s just not up to par with what you can get in aftermarket units.
When looking for replacement lights you have options of higher wattage headlight bulbs, led headlights, or projector headlights. You also can find halos/rings around your headlights that are brighter than the regular lightbulb itself.
Other options are offroad lighting which allows you to see further using less energy.
All these things combined together make a great improvement over stock lighting systems but be warned there are both upsides and downsides to any modification made to the vehicle which may affect how well something works or fits on your specific vehicle.
Sometimes, there are issues with the aftermarket headlights fitting correctly in the housing of your car. This means that you might cut up your headlight housing to make it fit better or even need to get new housings if they don’t fit at all.
You also want to be careful when modifying your wiring since a lot of cars use one harness for both headlights, which is part of the reason why some people have problems with them working properly together.
Additionally, these lights will require a resistor to change the voltage from 12vdc to 6-9vdc depending on what kind you get which can be problematic because not all resistors are able to handle more than 10watts without catching fire/melting so please purchase ones rated higher than 10watts for this reason.
Many people have problems with flickering or cheap ballasts because they are not made for high-wattage bulbs.
Most of the issues are easy to fix, but it’s still worth mentioning these things so you know what to expect when making this kind of upgrade.
This is a simple diagram showing how to wire up 2 H1 bulbs that use 4 separate wires. There are two wires for the low beams and two for the high beams.
Make sure you check polarity when connecting these since some ballasts do have a polarity but usually it is clearly marked on them. If it isn’t, just mark one wire as positive and negative when cutting them so you always know which way they can go when attaching them.
It is always best to do research before purchasing any upgrades for your vehicle and make sure that you understand how they work and how long they usually last.
Replacing your old halogen bulbs with aftermarket LED or HID headlights helps to effectively switch out yellow and dull beams for some white, bright light. You end up with brighter headlights that improve your vision while driving at night.
Advantages of upgrading headlights from halogen to LED/HID
- Helps to make your car look distinctive and bolder.
- Improves your vision on the road, making driving safer.
- LEDs and HIDs last longer compared to halogen bulbs.
- Reduces the dazzling effect on oncoming traffic.
- LEDs and HIDs consume less electrical power and produce brighter light.

There are other methods you can use to determine the size of the bulbs fitted in your car’s headlights. These methods are listed below:
- Checking your original bulbs
To find out what size of bulb you should get, take a look at your old bulbs after removing them from the headlight assembly for their size/part pattern. Bulbs normally have their sizes indicated on them.
- Check your vehicle’s manual
Your vehicle’s manual is probably lying in a glove box somewhere accumulating dust. It’s one of the most important resources you have when you need to make replacements on your car. Look for a section on bulb sizes when you need to upgrade your bulbs. You may find it under Vehicle Maintenance.
- Contact your vehicle manufacturer
Call your vehicle dealership or manufacturer to find out what bulb sizes you should get for your car. All you need to do is give them your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You should find it indicated on your dashboard, driver seat or door panel.
Installing new bulbs
- Locate the headlight assembly through the engine compartment.
- Unplug the wires that deliver power to the assembly.
- Remove the rubber grommet.
- Unscrew the old bulb and remove it.
- Clean your new bulb and install it.
- Return the rubber grommet to its position and plug the wires back.
- Test your bulbs to find out if they work.
Additional equipment that you may need
When installing HID bulbs, you may need to have:
- Alcohol tissues and wipes to clean the new bulb.
- A screwdriver
